Special Events

We regularly host a variety of events at Tula. Take a look at what we have planned, and check back often; we're adding new events every week.

Reset, a Series of Yin & Nidra Sessions

A special series with Rachel Kates & David Duerkop
First Sundays of the month from 6:30-8:30pm
May 5, June 2, October 6, November 3, and December 1

A quiet yin yoga practice will allow students to drift into sivasana, and while in this deeply relaxed state, fully absorb further cues to restore the body & mind.

This special series is designed for yogis who have stressful desk jobs, stand for long periods, or practice athletic vinyasa.

The first part of each class will be spent in a quiet set of yin poses that will soften the hips, pelvis, and back, and allow dry ligaments, tendons, and joints to release. The physical and emotional state experienced from yin yoga can be similar to receiving a massage.

The second part of each class will be spent reclined with supportive props, consciously letting go of any further physical tension, anxiety, and uneasiness.

Each week will be a complete practice, but multiple sessions offer cumulative benefits. A discount is offered to those who commit to a series. Bring extra clothing or a blanket & pillow for the extended time in sivasana.

Exploring Ashtanga Yoga

with Rhiannon Kirby
Sundays, 1:30-2:45
April 7, 14, 21, 28 and May 5

The Primary Series of Ashtanga Yoga, in the tradition of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, Mysore, South India, is known as the Yoga Chikitsa, meaning, yoga therapy. It is a healing process of cleansing and toning for the body, mind and senses. With exploration in pranayama (breathing), asanas (physical postures), bandhas (internal energy gates) and drishti (eye focus), this vinyasa system heats up the body, bringing oxygen to the blood, nourishing the glands and internal organs, cleansing and purifying the nervous system, creating a lighter, stronger mind and body.

Come explore this highly respected practice, learning how to weave it into your yoga routine in an approachable way. Through modifications and adjustments, you will discover that this system can be equal parts challenging and restorative.

The Biomechanics of Strength

A 4 week series with Nathan Paulus
Sundays, 1:30-2:45
May 19, May 26 and June 2

Strength is firmness in concentration, grace, and balance without being rigid. The more physically demanding yoga poses (chaturanga dandasana, arm balances, inversions) are an expression of these qualities, where pure physical strength is a secondary characteristic.

Often, deficiencies in strength are based in poor awareness of what is happening with spinal alignment, impatience or lack of awareness . For this series we will, spend time on developing spinal awareness relative to what is happening with gravitational forces. Students will begin to gain more insight into feeling inner body support. We will work to build awareness biomechanical principles that support inner body awareness: adductors, pelvic floor, transverse abdominal muscles, and costal region. The dynamic synthesis of these muscles in conjunction with both inner and external body awareness is commonly referred to as "core strength." We will learn techniques, to further your spinal awareness and access this natural biomechanical phenomenon that works to spread effort over a broad support structure, resulting in greater efficiency in the application of strength.

By the end of the series you will feel more confident in strength based postures, with a platform to develop a deeper practice, and new ways of understanding the relatively weaker areas of your body. For both dynamic flow, and more static hatha based practitioners, this means increased safety, enjoyment, and benefits felt not only from class, but in your daily living as well.
