Yoga Therapy (SomaYoga) Private Sessions

with Maile Wicklander MA, RYT-500, MBSR Teacher

SomaYoga Therapy is a unique approach to building strength, stability and flexibility while connecting mind + body. We blend neuroscience (somatics), classic yoga asana (postures), and functional movement to build intelligent, conscious body awareness.

Somatic movements release tension patterns & retrain muscle imbalances. Yoga practices calm & stabilize the nervous system and mind. These combined, can lead to greater ease in our daily activities and movements, help prevent injuries and bring more awareness to causes of stress.

During a session, you are guided to find the postures, movements and modifications that are unique to you and your specific needs. They are ideal for anyone interested in finding a more free, curious, and awake relationship with their interconnected mind/body/spirit.

FAQ’s

  • Use of Mudras and/or use of Marma points

  • Homework! Follow-up may include - poses you can do at home, book recommendations or other resources provided in order to learn more about yourself and to help support you as you continue on your wellness journey.

How is SomaYoga helpful?

SomaYoga can be helpful in*:

  • Recovering from injuries (once a doctor has cleared you for movement/yoga)

  • Releasing tension and tightness in muscles

  • Becoming more embodied (increasing interoception)

  • Bringing awareness to and addressing postural imbalances in the body due to repeated daily movements/injuries/chronic pain/habitual stress responses, etc.

  • Regulating the autonomic nervous system

  • Preventing future injuries from occurring (awakening muscles that may have become dormant and asleep that are needed for everyday functional movement as well as supporting an active/athletic lifestyle).

  • Relief of Stress/Anxiety and Depression

  • Coping with Trauma/PTSD/grief

*(this list is by no means exhaustive :)

Does a private session involve a lot of touching or physical adjustments? No. The goal with a SomaYoga session is to increase your own interospection - your ability to sense and awaken muscles and sense what your body needs/when it needs it. It is not about a perfect pose or exact alignment - but finding what is right for you in your own unique body. When proprioceptive touch is needed during a session (usually in order to ‘wake-up’ a muscle), I will either ask you to do it yourself OR ask for your specific verbal consent.
